Circa39 Hotel
Standing among much larger and more recent additions to this stretch of Collins Avenue, the small but eye-catching Circa39 Hotel invites you in to savor an ambience combining deco period style and contemporary South Beach comfort. The building’s exterior finish of pale ochre granite punctuated by white-and-blue eye-lidded windows leads into a cool, terrazzo tiled lobby that preserves some of the motifs of its earlier Forties existence amidst the renovated public areas. Formerly the Copley Plaza, and also originally built in 1939, present-day Circa39 retains a sense of wit and eclecticism along with its updated sense of chic. This shows up in corners of the lobby itself, where several lounge areas create their own quirky, individual statement: for instance, a carved stone fireplace is surrounded by a semi-circle of traditional wing-backed chairs accompanied by red and silver metallic rocking chairs. The staff are young, hip and knowledgeable about every aspect of local Miami entertainment and nightlife. Even if you have little time to get out, there is activity right at hand, with complimentary outdoor movies shown poolside every Wednesday night that are themed to local or calendar events; Thursday evening is Industry Night for networking with other professionals in the cocktail bar; and Fridays see a Wine Tasting Night. And at most any time, there is a delicious snack or meal to be had at the ground-floor Bistro@39, and complimentary breakfast every morning.
The rooms
It’s probably never simple to reinvent the original proportions of a Thirties or Forties property to meet the larger expectations of the 21st century traveler: the trick is often to make a virtue of necessity. Such is the case with Circa39’s guest accommodation, where intimacy and smaller space are made attractive in a way that size alone does not always provide. In fact, aside from the limitations of narrow guest level corridors, this works quite well for the Circa39. The 83 rooms and suites have a pleasant airiness and efficiency to them, enhanced by the brand-new hardwood floors and simple color scheme of cobalt blue curtains contrasting against stark white walls and furnishings. A small kitchenette area with microwave, mini-fridge and plenty of storage makes the suite a suitable hideaway to bunker down in by the beach for days. The bathroom has a full tub and showerhead and—unlike some renovated deco buildings—there is adequate room to move about. On the other hand, builders of the time were generous with storage areas: there are ample walk-in closets in both the living and bedroom. Bedrooms have large king-sized beds, a generous-sized desk, and windows with vistas of the avenue and beach beyond. The Mansion, which is the courtyard building in which the suites are situated, lets you look down into an open and serene interior of trees and garden areas.

Miami Hotels : Where to Stay Whether You're Hitting Art Basel or the Beach
Setai ($950 per night and up)
Most Decadent
Service: This is the current hot spot in Miami for those willing to fork over the big bucks. If you’re a high roller and don’t mind spending what the Setai requires, it’s the perfect choice (especially so, if you’re a man looking to pick-up models). Upon entering the Setai you’re likely to settle into a Zen-like state (save for the fact that some staff have more attitude than the guests). The complete opposite of what you’d expect to see in Miami, the resort is darkly dramatic, decorated in imported black stone, warm teak, brick and bamboo.
Location: In the heart of South Beach’s oceanfront district.
Amenities: The rooms are impeccable; the spa services are over-indulgent, and the restaurant has amazingly delectable Trans-Ethnic Asian creations. One of the most decadent luxuries at the Setai are the three temperature controlled pools, set at 75, 85 and 95 degrees. And, for those who prefer the beach, the Setai definitely has the most luxurious loungers around. The hotel also offers baby-sitting, spa/fitness/massage, jet ski rentals and yoga.
The Raleigh ($325 per night and up)
Best Pool
Service: This classic Art Deco gem has a rich history. Recent renovations gave the hotel some modern updates, but it’s still respected for its original charm and character.
Location: The Raleigh is located in the heart of the action and is perfect for those seeking the full South Beach experience. It’s great for the sophisticated partier. Guests will be just steps away from countless clubs, restaurants and Lincoln Road Mall.
Amenities: The Raleigh is host to one of the world’s most renowned pools, which is surrounded by cabanas and lush tropical landscaping. Under the canopy of Sea-grape trees and bamboo lanterns, the outdoor terrace is a picturesque place to dine or have lunch meetings. And the beach is only a short stroll away. After dark, be sure to wet your whistle at the hidden Martina Bar, one of the hottest locals' bars in SoBe, without the obnoxious crowd. The Raleigh also includes a restaurant, beach access, pool, complimentary internet, and all spa services are performed at the Standard.
Mandarin Oriental ($259 per night and up)
Best Service
Service: The Mandarin Oriental offers true 5-star service: no detail is overlooked, and the staff (which in some cases has been flown in from Asia in order to demonstrate the art of exceptional service) is eager to please.
Location: The Mandarin, located on Brickel Key in downtown Miami, is the best choice for the discerning traveler in town for business or to get some peace and quiet. The pool and restaurant overlook Biscayne Bay and the city lights of South Beach, offering impressive views. It’s an ideal location for those who like to be close to the action, but not in the middle of it. This is not the spot, if you’re looking for a weekend of debauchery and partying.
Amenities: All rooms have impressive 10-foot ceilings, spacious bathrooms and balconies with either a city or water view. The Mandarin also has a private beach, but water access isn’t allowed since you are actually on the bay. Instead you can sit at the pool deck and be spoiled by the staff with snacks and herbal iced tea. The hotel offers a restaurant, room service, a spa/fitness/massage center, baby-sitting, yoga and pilates, and it’s dog friendly.
Hotel St. Augustine ($149 per night and up)
No Frills
Service: The St. Augustine, a favorite of fashion industry alum, is a good choice for someone who’s on a budget and not looking for full-service or resort-style accommodations. Instead, you can experience South Beach like a local. The St. Augustine is known for its family-style service – don’t be surprised if you receive a warm welcome from Bailey, the ‘house’ chocolate lab.
Location: This hotel is tucked within a quaint Art Deco neighborhood in the coveted SoFi area of South Beach.
Amenities: Rooms are small, clean and simple, and all feature a spa steam bath and shower. There’s no restaurant, but you can order room service from La Locanda, one of the best Italian restaurants in South Beach. The hotel doesn’t have a pool, but it is just a few blocks from the 3rd Street Beach, a local favorite. At St. Augustine, you’ll also be just steps away from shops, restaurants and clubs, and the hotel also features baby-sitting, massages, complimentary continental breakfast and Internet access -- and it’s pet-friendly.
The Standard ($165 per night and up)
Best Deal and Most Relaxing Spa Experience
Service: The sister hotel to the Raleigh, the Standard has the perfect blend of simplicity, quiet and fun. The lobby is tastefully decorated in a postmodern blend of Scandinavian meets Santa Fe.
Location: Just a stone's throw away from South Beach, the Standard is located on the Venetian Causeway.
Amenities: The bungalow style rooms are minimal and smart but can't be considered luxurious. However, the overall mood of the grounds is very relaxing and intimate. The pool overlooks Biscayne Bay, and, if you’re lucky, you’ll even see dolphins as you're lounging with your smoothie. The poolside bar is the perfect spot for a sunset cocktail – be sure to order the Mango Mimosa. The Standard also has amazing spa and mud treatments. Guests often feel so relaxed that they stroll the grounds in robes and slippers. Perfect for a weekend detox, as you’re not in the thick of things but just close enough. You won’t have beach access here, but you can take the complimentary shuttle bus to the Raleigh and use the beach there. Overall, this is one of the best deals in town. The Standard also offers room service from 7am to midnight, a restaurant, spa/fitness/mudbaths, outdoor tubs, patios, yoga and is pet friendly.

Luxury at Loews Miami Beach Hotel
Looking for bang for your buck? Loew's Hotel in Miami is located in the heart of South Beach, right on the beach. Though it may not have the "cool factor" coveted by the trend-setting crowd who frequent the Delano, the hotel is gorgeous and the service is remarkably good.If you've been to a Ritz-Carlton resort, you may find some similarities in terms of the elegance of the classic Mediterranean-style. The hotel has a stunning marble lobby, filled with flowers and classic old-world style. The pool area is absolutely gorgeous and as soon as you see it, you'll want to grab a lounge chair and spend the entire day drinking margaritas and checking out the crowd.
Rooms are attractive and modern with small touches, such as an art deco sofa and arty black and white photographs. These give the rooms a sleek, modern feel. Book a room overlooking the pool and beach and you'll be dazzled by the view of golden sands and thrashing blue waves. Balconies can be generous.
Service is quite good here, and if you are used to five-star hotels, you'll notice similar attention to service, cleanliness, and customer requests. If looking good in that swimsuit is a concern, you'll be pleased to hear the health club is substantial. Treadmills, bicycles, and other high tech aerobic equipment are stationed near three televisions and a great selection of newspapers and magazines. Massage treatments are available as well.
Loews Miami Beach represents a very good value for several reasons. First, you'll feel like you are staying at a much more expensive luxury hotel given the surroundings and service. Second, the hotel is centrally located, so you will save a fortune on taxi cabs as you can walk to most of the hottest restaurants and clubs. Finally, you may be able to snare a good price on one of the hotel discount web sites on the Internet. So what are you waiting for? Book your flight!
